Uploading files
The two routes into the library, the folder rule, and the limits an upload fails at.
Uploads always go into a project. The upload area sits in every project above „Alle“ (All), „Unsortiert“ (Unfiled) and every folder; the overview of all projects has none. Every member of the workspace may upload into every project they see; no particular role is needed.
The signed-in product speaks German, so its labels and messages are quoted in German below, with the English rendering in italics.
The two routes
Files. Drag them onto the area headed „Bilder oder Videos hierher ziehen“ (Drag images or videos here), or pick them from the file dialog with „Dateien auswählen“ (Choose files). Several at once is fine.
A whole folder from your computer. The second button, „Ordner vom Rechner auswählen“ (Choose folder from computer), takes a whole folder from your computer rather than individual files. It does not become a folder in the library: the files land in the chosen location.
The files land in the open project. Above the area, „Ablageort“ (Location) chooses which of its folders; without a choice that is the project’s „Unsortiert“. If you are already inside a library folder, the location is locked to that folder.
The folder rule
Only files sitting directly in the chosen folder on your computer are
uploaded. Subfolders are not descended into. A campaign folder consisting of
01_RAW/, 02_Selects/ and 03_Final/ therefore yields nothing at all.
After the selection, the area reports under „Aus dem Ordner von deinem Rechner übernommen“ (Taken from the folder on your computer) what it skipped, and names the subfolders.
At most 250 files per operation. Pick more and the limit applies — the rest can be selected afterwards:
Pro Vorgang werden 250 Dateien übernommen — 30 weitere wurden nicht hochgeladen. Wählen Sie den Rest anschließend erneut aus.
250 files are taken per operation — 30 further ones were not uploaded. Please select the rest afterwards.
Unsupported files — PSD, RAW, XMP, whatever else lives in a working folder —
are counted and reported as one line. System files such as .DS_Store,
Thumbs.db or desktop.ini disappear without a word.
The sorting out happens before the cap: a folder of 400 files of which 300 are PSDs yields 100 images.
What can be uploaded
PNG, JPEG, MP4 and MOV. What can be checked beyond that is set out under Formats.
Up to 100 MB per image, up to 1 GB per video.
The file's content decides its format, not its name. A PNG with the
extension .jpg is stored, processed and exported as PNG. The file name stays
as it was uploaded.
Video additionally: up to 3 minutes, up to 4K, no ProRes. These three conditions are checked before the upload and speak up before anything is transferred. If the browser cannot measure a file, it is transferred and refused when it is processed.
What happens after the upload
A window with every selected file appears at the bottom right, before the first one is transferred. Each file passes „Wird vorbereitet …“ (Preparing), „Wird hochgeladen …“ (Uploading), „Wird registriert …“ (Registering) and „Prüfung wird gestartet …“ (Starting the check). Once data flows during the upload, the row shows the percentage and the MB transferred. Three files run at a time; the others show „Wartet“ (Waiting). Only then does the result appear on the tile.
The window’s header counts the finished and the failed, and its bar grows with the bytes transferred. The arrow collapses the list, the dash shrinks the window to a small bar. When a file fails, the list opens again. Once everything is through, the cross closes the window.
The upload runs only in the open page. A reload or a closed tab ends it; it is not continued. The verification afterwards runs to completion even if you close the tab.
A video over 100 MB takes longer to verify; at 1 GB it can take a few minutes, and several such videos are verified one after another. Its thumbnail is usually made by the verification.
Where a file has no thumbnail, image or video, the tile menu offers „Vorschaubild erneut erzeugen“ (Regenerate thumbnail), for a video over 100 MB only once its verification has succeeded. For a small PNG or JPEG file the tile may already show the original while the thumbnail is missing. It can be requested only a few times an hour. Where no thumbnail can be made from the file at all, the entry disappears.
For a video over 100 MB this takes a few minutes again; for that long the tile reads „Vorschaubild wird erzeugt …“ (Thumbnail is being generated …). Every other file usually takes seconds. Once the thumbnail is finished, the tile shows it after a page reload at the latest.
What can go wrong
„Dateityp … wird nicht unterstützt“ (File type … is not supported). The message lists the acceptable formats. If the browser reports no file type at all — for HEIC, Chrome regularly does — the extension decides, and an unknown extension means refusal.
„Datei ist größer als 100 MB.“ (File is larger than 100 MB.) or „Datei ist größer als 1 GB.“ (File is larger than 1 GB.) Which of the two appears depends on whether the file is a video.
„Der Inhalt der Datei passt nicht zu ihrem Dateityp. Bitte die Datei im
richtigen Format speichern und erneut hochladen.“ (The file's content does
not match its file type. Please save the file in the right format and upload it
again.) The message appears after the transfer, at registration. The content is
a different format from the one the name states, and not one that is accepted in
its place — a video with the extension .png, say, or a HEIC photo with the
extension .jpg. The transferred file is deleted again and takes up no storage.
„Das Video ist 4:12 lang. Verarbeitet werden bis zu 3:00 Minuten.“ (The video is 4:12 long. Up to 3:00 minutes are processed.) The message names the measured value and the limit.
„Das Video ist 4096 × 2160 Pixel groß. Verarbeitet wird bis 4K (3840 × 2160).“ (The video is 4096 × 2160 pixels. Up to 4K (3840 × 2160) is processed.) Portrait and landscape are treated alike — what is measured is the longer and the shorter edge, not width and height.
„ProRes wird nicht unterstützt. Bitte das Video als H.264 oder H.265
exportieren.“ (ProRes is not supported. Please export the video as H.264 or
H.265.) A .mov extension says nothing about what is inside the container, so
it is looked into before the upload.
A card with numbers appears in the row instead of the progress. The workspace is out of storage. The card names the amount used and the amount allowed — and that the trash still occupies storage.
„Verify konnte nicht gestartet werden: …“ (Verification could not be started: …) The upload was fine; only the check could not be started. The button „Erneut verifizieren“ (Verify again) next to it starts it for that asset without transferring the file a second time.
The verification failed although the upload was fine. The tile then reads „Verify fehlgeschlagen“ (Verification failed). The check can be started again with „Verifizieren“ (Verify) in the tile's menu or with „Erneut prüfen“ (Check again) on the asset's page; the file is not transferred a second time.
